Misconceptions
If I sign a donor card or the back of my driver’s license, attempts will not be made to save my life if I am in an accident.
Truth
Your donation decision does not affect the quality of your medical care. In an emergency, every attempt is made to save your life. You are not considered a potential donor until AFTER death has been declared.
Myth
If I donate organs and tissues, it will change my appearance and affect my funeral plans.
Truth
Donation does not affect funeral plans. An open casket is still possible because being a donor does not change your physical appearance.
Myth
My family will be charged if I am a donor.
Truth
Your family will not pay ANY donation expenses. These costs are paid by the organizations that recover the organs and tissues.
Myth
If I decide to become a donor, my signed driver’s license is all that is necessary.
Truth
Signing your license or donor card is important. However, the MOST IMPORTANT STEP in becoming a donor is to discuss your decision with your family. They will be asked at the time of your death to give permission for your donation, even if you have signed your license.
