For all who knew Jim Bates personally, a wonderful image comes to mind when his name is mentioned. It may be the image of a Martinsville, Indiana student who excelled in academics as well as athletics. Or maybe it's the image of a coach who taught by example. Perhaps it's the image of a Dad who embraced you and said he not only loved you but liked you, too. Or it may be the image of a brother who played with you, defended you and grew up with you. Or the image of a PapPa who poked fun with you and sang to you. Or, perhaps the image of a friend who never let you down.

Whatever your thoughts, Jim Bates was so much more than any image we emblazon in our minds. He was a man with a passion for honesty, decency and love. He was "who he was" and exactly how he presented himself to be. From Martinsville to Carlisle, to Greencastle, Madison, Bainbridge and then back home again, he carved a life dedicated to family, friends and education. He thought solid values were what really mattered in life. He was a husband who cherished his wife, a Dad and PapPa so proud of his children, a brother bursting with pride, an uncle smiling with delight, a teacher "as straight as an arrow," a coach who played by the rules, a friend for a lifetime and, most importantly, a man who loved God. He brightened our lives with his smile, talents, humor and kindness. Not a day goes by that we are not reminded of the sunshine, roses, love and laughter he brought to us. We love him now and forever. "He touched the lives of many…we will never be the same."

God bless and keep Jim Bates until we see him in heaven.
